Each month we will interview one of the gals and reveal all of their beauty secrets, tips, loves and inspirations. We do hope you enjoy this peek behind the scenes here at The Powder Room.

Q: What's your favourite thing about being a Powderpuff Girl? 

I really enjoy meeting the girls that come in and hearing where they are headed out for the day, be it a hen party, wedding day or just a girls night out! It's not your usual 9 to 5 job, I really enjoy what we do here at the Powder Room and I love the atmosphere.

Q: What is your favourite product?

At the moment I would have to say it is The Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer highlightging powder. It can be used in so many different ways and really glams up a make-up. Use it under your brow for wide awake eyes or pinch in those cheeks by using it on your cheek bones!

Q: What is your favourite era for Hair, Make up and fashion?

My favourite era for all of these is without a doubt the 1940's. Women were finding new ways of being expressive and hairstyling played a massive part in shaping the style of the era. in 1947 Dior launched their new look range giving women the clothing for that perfect hour glass figure and make-up became very glamarous again, the perfectly shaped eyebrows of the 1940's are so flattering on any woman.

Q: Where did you go to make up school ? 

I studied at West Thames College, HND Specialist make-up for theatre, fashion, film and television. it was such a fantastic course to be on. there is a big focus on period hair and make-up, we studied and practiced everything from the egyptians to the 1960's.

Q: Where is your favourite place to shop?

San Francisco's Haight street , San Jose and Santa Cruize have some of the most amazing Vintage shops I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. They have vast warehouses of the most amazing quality American vintage I have ever seen, and they are all so inexpensive. You just dont get it here anymore. Tragically I can not justify a move to California purely for the Vintage shopping... although I have tried.

Q: Who is you style icon?

Style icon is a tough one, because I think I have one for every era! but if I had to choose one I think I would say Jackie Onassis. she was such a classic beauty and her style was unfaltered.

Sam is best known for her fabulous victory rolls and you will have seen her handy work at The London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony were she worked on the team that helped create the perfectly authentic look for all of the nurses in the NHS segment of the show.

 Sam says "I love that there are so many variations to this style, it allows me to be creative and no two girls will ever leave looking the same!"

Something for a rainy day...

"and now it's time for a treat" (said in 1940's TV presenter style) 

We thought we would interrupt this rather rainy day with a little treat. 

Now that all that healthy stuff is over we think its defiantly time to enjoy something naughty. 

So here is a reward for being so fit & healthy during the games in the form of a retro recipe...

 "Never quit, be yourself and don't put too much flour in your brownies"

120g butter

50g dark chocolate

2 eggs beaten

200g white sugar

a cup of chopped walnuts

45g flour

vanilla essence

pinch of salt

* Preheat the oven to 170c/340f/gas mark 3.5

* Melt the butter with chocolate in a saucepan, add the eggs, sugar, a drop or 2 of vanilla essence, a pinch of salt and the chopped walnuts.

* Add the flour. Mix well and pour into a square (20cm) cake tin lined with baking parchment. Bake for half an hour.

Hitchcock's Heroines

 London plays host to yet another fabulous event. 

The BFI Southbank celebrate the most influential and iconic British film director of all time Alfred Hitchcock. From August to October BFI present a complete Hitchcock retrospective.

We love a good movie and these classic nail biting, pillow peekers are a must see, although you might want to book in with us for a manicure afterwards. 

Hitchcock is famous for casting the most beautiful leading ladies.

Apply base coat to all nails. Then the two coats of dark blue to all nails except your two accent nails (ring finger). At the same time apply two coats of white to your accent finger nails. We prefer traditional methods so we added the stripes free hand. First of all the top stripe using the smokey blue and then the second smaller stripe using the aqua blue. Wait about 3 mins then apply top coat to all nails. You can now put your hands together for the team in style.

Let the games begin: Get podium pretty!

With only 3 days until the official opening ceremony of the games us gals are getting all sporty! 

Well, as sporty as one can be whilst still looking perfectly groomed. 

We are proud and excited to have 3 of our Powderpuff girls working on the ceremonies, one in the hair department (of course) one in the make up department (of course) and one performing! 

Wishing our gals lots of luck. Be sure to cheer them on! 

Our Columbia Road boutique is in the heart of London's east end which is buzzing with Olympic fever. We are feeling super patriotic too we have adored our window with tiny little union jacks and red, white and blue product!

BUT we are most excited about prettying you all for the games! 

The games were last hosted in Britain in 1948. The era of gorgeous grooming. To celebrate the games returning we have created two very different looks from THEN and NOW which are bound to secure you a spot on the podium of pretty.

Recreate the era of gorgeously groomed hair and perfectly pretty make up.

Make up in the 1940's was all about the lipstick - and matte red was the look. Even land girls wouldn't be seen without it! Women in the 1940's aspired to the Hollywood version, typified by Rita Hayworth, and although few could achieve it in such tough times, they still made the effort to be glamourous!

Everything you need to get the look

Start with perfectly primed skin. Matte was the order of the day. Apply neutral beige eye shadow and shade the sockets with a neutral stone or light brown. Use a good liquid eye liner for a very thin line along the upper lid and extend slightly at the outer corner for a dramatic look. Be sure to accentuate your eyebrows and highlighting the arch. Use lashings of mascara on just the upper lashes or go all out Hollywood with full false lashes. Add a light dusting of rosy pink blush to the apples of your cheeks.  Complete the look with lips. Perfectly lined with a good red pencil that matches your lipstick. Lipstick needs to be matte pillar-box red. Blot well. 

Hair in the 1940's was always impressively groomed. Big bouncy waves and of course victory rolls 

were popular.

To create this look you will need all of the above. 

The simplest and most flattering is a two victory rolls in a side parting, one large and one small.

 Start by making the side parting and then section the back of your hair off from ear to ear and clip out of the way.Starting at the parting and working away back comb sections down to the ear, spraying each as you go. Take a smoothing brush and smooth the whole section. Wind round 2 or 3 fingers depending on the size you want the rolls, into a cone shape with the open end facing front 

and pin in position with Kirby grips in the centre of the cone. You should be able to see 
down the cones from the front but and this should be closed at the back.

Try this look at home or book into The Powder Room and see how it's done. 

NOW: New School Gorgeous 

Today make up is very individual. It's bright, it's bold and it gives a nod to many iconic eras. Today we like to experiment and trial new looks. There certainly isn't one solid look, it's about being bold, using colour and having gorgeously groomed eyebrows and the longest fullest lashes. Our look is very East end cool and is inspired by the bright colours from the official Olympic logos.

Hair should be glamorously manageable. Sport a sophisticated top knot for the ultimate in modern elegance. 

Introducing Bunny for our Hair Look Book

Tie your hair up into a high pony tail. Then section into 4 and back comb each section from the base until about half way down the length. Then use a smoothing brush on the outside edge of the hair to tame. A cheat is to use a doughnut, we don't do this at The Powder Room but it's much easier to create this look at home with one of these. Simply slide it on to your ponytail then wrap your hair around the doughnut and tuck in any loose ends. Pin it to secure it. This look will ensure you look effortlessly elegant all day long.  

Everything you will need to create the look 

Make up  Use the amazing Paul & Joe Pearl Foundation Primer, it illuminates to give your complexion a radiant glow. In the absence of the Summer sun we recommend a bold orange blush complimented with strong brows. Channel your inner Barbie, go for lots of mascara or false lashes for pretty peepers with lashings of layered neon coloured eye shadows. Lips should be pink and glossy. 

You could go for pastel nails in orange/yellow, we love these pastel Mavala mini colours or.....

you could cheer on the team GB with pretty patriotic nails...
